Valen Thorn

the only child of a forgotten rockstar

Valen was raised an only child of two parents who were madly in love and yet, who met an untimely fate when Valen was only nine. He remembers growing up on reading Dracula and Interview With a Vampire, watching Nosferatu with his dad and always getting excited for Halloween. He remembers the love his parents had for their family, each other, all things weird and unusual, and spooky, and the love of their careers. His mother and father were both in the music industry. His dad was a former rockstar and his mum was a producer. They lived in a place off the coast, not too far from the beach even if they hardly ever went. After his parents died, he went into the foster care system for about 6 years. Wanting to keep the memory of his parents alive, Valen promised himself he would take up a career as a musician, somehow. The system wasn’t the best for him because Valen alway liked keep to himself. Being an only child, he grew up an introvert, drawing and listening to music, and after his parents died he had no one but his love for music. It wasn’t until his 15th birthday that a police officer adopted him, and soon it was just two of them.Another town on the coast, this place where everyone knew one another, and Val knew he had to start making friends if he didn’t want to stay in with this person who adopted him all the time. It was a rocky start at first, the officer being a single man who lost his girlfriend in a car wreck - the same way Val lost his parents, they had trauma in common. But with his job, he wasn’t home a lot, so after school, Valen hung out with some kids from his grade and started to make friends. They did plays in the school theatre, they made their own rock band, it was great. And he was starting to come out of his shell, especially since these kids stuck together until college. As Valen and his adoptive dad grew to know each other, it wasn’t until then they started to respect the other as father and son. With getting older and closer going off to college, he went to tell his “father” of his promise he made about being a musician. But his adopted dad wasn’t so supportive of the idea and kept pushing for him to get a job that was a little more realistic, but Valen didn’t listen.Going against the man’s wishes, Valen didn’t apply to university when he was supposed to, left home with some of the friends and started their own band and called themselves DRACULADS. It was rocky, they were struggling, but they had the freedom they always craved. After a few years of getting gigs and finally being able to buy their own gear, the band was able to get a small place of their own instead of sleeping in the drummer’s parents garage.

The band has hit rocky start after rocky start, with labels picking them up and dropping them so fast without giving them a chance. They knew they couldn’t quit. It’s almost been fifteen years and now that they’re all in their thirties, things aren’t getting easier, but they are getting to do more live shows and festivals.

•He wants to live in California and in the UK.•LA was where his mum was from, and that’s where his parents met, so he wants to be able to get out there.•Val feels that if he’s out in LA, he has a better chance of the band being successful, and he could also work on his acting skills, too. He has no desire to be fully detached from Europe.•Being out in LA might also put DRACULADS on the map and get them a good record deal.
